Zumba Fitness was named 2012 Company of the Year in Inc. magazine today. The magazine features growing companies in the private sector.
“Winning company of the year is such an exciting honour for Zumba,” Alberto Perlman, Zumba Fitness co-founder and CEO, said in an email to Club Industry. “This honour is 100 per cent dedicated to our Zumba instructors and fitness facilities that have taken in the Zumba program. We’ve received such a warm reception from our partners and instructors and are excited for what the future holds.”
The branded fitness program was launched in 2001 by Perlman, COO Alberto Aghion and Chief Creative Officer Beto Perez. It now has over 14 million weekly class participants in over 14,000 location and 150+ countries.
“Zumba is remarkable because it is as good at unleashing what it calls FEJ—freeing, electrifying joy,” Inc. Editor Eric Schurenberg said in a statement.
As part of its expanding repertoire, Zumba Fitness offers live classes (which have now now expanded into fitness concerts and specialty programs for kids and active older adults), DVDs, video games and a huge clothing range.
Zumba has been a long-time partner in SCW Fitness Education Mania events around the country. Sara Kooperman, CEO of SCW Fitness Education, Northbrook, IL, says the company deserves the recognition from Inc. magazine.
“Zumba has done amazing things to revitalize and rejuvenate the fitness industry,” Kooperman says. “What I see as possibly the most significant impact is the health and wellness industry’s ability, willingness and pure desire to embrace a form of exercise that everyone can do no matter their fitness level, race, size and shape.”
Raising more than $4 million for charities through its Zumbathon events is, in itself, a mighty achievement from Zumba which also includes contributions to Augie’s Quest during the annual International, Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) show.
