The Variety Cycle from Sydney to Hobart

Alternative Sydney to Hobart for lycra-clad land lovers

Pump up your tyres and clip into your pedals, The Variety Cycle 2015 is gearing up for a lycra-clad land lover’s alternative to the famed Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race; an epic 15-day cycling adventure from Sydney to Hobart, via Melbourne.

This feel-good physical challenge to raise funds for Aussie kids in need is Australia’s most ‘spoketacular’ charity cycle, taking in an iconic and breathtaking cycle route starting in Sydney on Saturday 28 February and finishing in Hobart on Sunday 15 March 2015.

Following the success of The Variety Cycle 2014, this life-changing adventure will see a philanthropic peloton saddling up to travel through some of Australia’s most iconic cycling routes and landscapes en route to their final destination, the striking seaport of Hobart, Tasmania.

For cycling novices, weekend warriors, elite athletes and recreational bicyclists alike there are options for everyone. Choices range from the full 15 day Sydney to Hobart cycle, an 8-day Sydney to Melbourne or 7-day Melbourne to Hobart option for the fabulously fit through to the shorter 2-day cycles (Sydney into Goulburn, Wangaratta into Melbourne, Devonport into Launceston which will incorporate the spectacular Cradle Mountain or Swansea into Hobart). There’s even a one day cycle from Sydney to Nowra! With a variety of options to choose from, this inspirational fundraiser is equipped to get new and experienced riders pedaling together for the greater good.

What makes this ride even better? It’s fully supported with training and preparation advice beforehand, all food and accommodation taken care of, as well as bike mechanics, medical teams, support vehicles front and back and much more, so you can just focus on your cycling, and let The Variety Cycle team take care of everything else.

More than just a bike ride, The Variety Cycle is a bighearted quest to improve the lives of Aussie children in need, across some of the most remote regional communities of our country, while giving participants a unique experience. Riders engage with communities and schools along the way, delivering much needed equipment and resources. With an overall fundraising goal of $1 million, donations are funded through the cyclists’ remarkable fundraising efforts combined with the generosity of our event sponsors.

Australian Paralympian skier, cyclist and paratriathlete Michael Milton OAM, The Variety Cycle 2015 ambassador, is urging others to get involved saying, “I’m thrilled to support The Variety Cycle 2015 and accredit this epic event presented by Variety – the Children’s Charity. I’m fortunate to be in good health and want to use my ability to help sick, disadvantaged and special needs kids reach their full potential. You too can make a difference by riding alongside me, and joining The Variety Cycle 2015.

I encourage you to challenge yourself and make the pledge to ride all 15 days or even just two days to test yourself physically, mentally and to help make a difference on the lives of Aussie kids.”

Tam Johnston, CEO of Variety – the Children’s Charity NSW commented about the importance of the event in helping Variety families saying, “The Variety Cycle is a unique cycling event where riders get to experience the benefit of their fundraising efforts first hand.

Equipment for schools and individual children will be delivered on route personally by riders, with further funds raised to benefit children and their families in the wider community.”

The Variety Cycle is our new flagship event that helped us touch the lives of more than 100,000 children around Australia this year. In 2015 we hope to raise $1 million through this event, helping us increase the number of lives touched, helping children in need to overcome whatever obstacles they face and live life to the fullest.”

Registration fees cover everything you need to enjoy the event safely; including items such as support vehicles front and back, bike mechanics, food, accommodation, medical teams and more, so all you need to do is bring your bike, hop on and ride. Participants are also asked to pledge a minimum fundraising amount to support Variety’s work giving practical equipment, programs and experiences to help Aussie kids in need.

There’s also an option each day for riders to jump 50km+ ahead by bus which they can use as needed.
