The health club market has shown surprising resilience in difficult economic times. Health club membership grew in 2010 and 2011. In 2011, it reached an all-time high of 51.4 million members.
Despite this – and despite being half of the market for club membership – female members have a higher tendency to cancel their memberships than men. Starting in 2009, club memberships among women have been steadily declining.
